THE EFFECT OF GUM CHEWING ON THE ORAL GLUCOSE CLAERANCE TIME

Abstract
Although the chewing of gum is a common habit for us, the effect on dental health has not been yet satisfactorily inverstigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the DMFT Index, the favourite degree of gum crewing, the time of gum chewing as dietary habit of subjects and the effect of gum chewing on the oral glucose clearance time. 89 dental college students were participated in this experiment for the study. The DMFT Index, the favourite degree of gum chewing, the time of gum chewing were surveyed by a questionnaire. The oral glucose clearance time was measured by the Glukotest teststrip(Boehringer Manheim GmbH, Germany) for the detection of glucose in urine.
The first experiment was concerned .with the effect ? of chewing:sugar-containing and su:ar free chewing gum on oral glucose clearance time. After consumption of 10% glucose solution, the oral glucose clearance time of before and after the gum chewing were measured and compared.
The second experiment was concerned with the effect of four types of marketing chewing gum on the oral glucose clearance time. After consumption of 20% glucose solution, the oral glucose clearance time of before and after the gum chewing were measured and compared. And the difference of oral glucose clearance time between four types of marketing chewing gum were investigated. Thereafter, the obtained data were statistically analyzed and discussed.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. From survey of favourite degree of gum chewing, only 4.5% of subjects disliked the gum chewing and most respondents did not dislike chewing gum.
2.. From survey of time of gum chewing, the most of percentile was within ten minutes and the least of percentile was over 61 minutes. 75% of subjects was within 30 minutes.
3. There was significant positive correlation between the favourite degree of gum
chewing and DMFT index, and the time of gum chewing. But. there was no
significant correlation between the DMFT index and the time of gum chewing.
4. After consumption of 10% glucose solution, 15 min of gum chewing did not
influence on resting oral glucose clearance time in regardless of type of chewing
gum. But sugar-containing chewing gum showed statistically signicant increasing
oral glucose clearance time and sugar free chewing gum stewed statistically
signicant decreasing oral glucose clearance time.
5. After consumption of20%glucose solution, only "DESSERT" gum was not statistically different in resting oral glucose clearance time. And the oral glucose clearance time were decreased in the three types of marketing gum, and there was not signigicant difference between these three types of gum. 6. To improve the oral health, it is suggested that the chewing until the sugar contained in gum is cleaned from the mouth may be desirable, when we chew sugar-containing gum.
